Beat Those Student Loans!

Even if they’re financially savvy, a lot of Americans continue to carry student loan debt with them for years after they’ve graduated from college.  Use these strategies to shake off that heavy financial burden:

  • Make it a priority.  Yes, you have a lot of bills to pay, but focus on paying off student loans so you can turn your attention to saving for retirement.
  • Create a repayment plan that works.  Make sure the date your student loan payment is due works with your monthly budget, and consolidate your loans so you only need to make one monthly payment.
  • Focus on variable private loans.  The interest rates on these loans can quickly change, so pay as much toward them as possible while also putting at least a minimum monthly contribution toward fixed-rate federal loans.

Sign up for auto-deductions.  If you opt for auto-deductions, you won’t accidentally miss a payment date.  Plus, all government and some private lenders charge a slightly lower interest rate if you pay this way.

The Basics of Summer Weeding

Summer is here and that means splashing in the pool, kicking back with a tall glass of iced tea and everyone’s favorite activity—weeding! Maybe we are exaggerating a little bit, but weeding is an unavoidable summer chore. The combination of summer rain and summer sun means that every plant in the yard is growing like crazy, so how can you stay on top of weed growth during the warmer months?

Do a Little Bit Every Day

Since everything in your yard grows so quickly over the course of the summer, it’s important to weed every day if possible. Practice taking 10 minutes every day when you return home to weed your yard. Putting in 10 minutes 6 days a week is equivalent to spending a sweaty hour in the sun on Sunday.

Get Your Hands Dirty

While there are many different weeding tools available on the market, from devices to chemicals, nothing beats the two hands that you already have. Put on a pair of gloves and weed by hand before they have the chance to flower. The longer that you wait to pull out the weeds, the more likely they are to spread and take over your flowerbeds. The best time to weed is after a period of rain while the soil is damp but not muddy. Pull weeds out from the root to get the entire plant and prevent them from re-sprouting. Weeding in dry soil often breaks the plant off before the root so it will grow right back in a couple of days.

Use Mulch If Necessary

Once your garden is free of weeds, mulch can help to maintain it. Weeds prefer bare soil, so a quick layer of mulch will keep weeds at bay and prevent them from popping up again.

Bel Air ALDI Announces Grand Opening Date

The ALDI store in Bel Air is opening soon at the Bel Air Plaza, with a ribbon-cutting, giveaways and more planned.

BEL AIR, MD — In two weeks, the anchor space that has been vacant for nearly two years in the shopping center on US 1 at MD 24 will be up and running with a new grocer.  ALDI will open at the Bel Air Plaza on Thursday, Jan. 19.

The anchor space in the Bel Air Plaza has sat vacant since Mars closed in January 2015. To celebrate the new ALDI store, several activities are planned.  First, there will be a ceremonial ribbon-cutting. Once the store opens its doors, the first 100 shoppers to enter will receive "golden tickets," or ALDI gift cards of various amounts. On opening day, all shoppers can enter a sweepstakes to win produce for a year. The store is also planning to give away product samples and distribute eco-friendly bags on its first day in business.

Roadside Assistance Plans

Being stranded on the side of the road with a flat tire or some other mechanical problem can happen to anyone at any time.  A roadside assistance plan is the kind of purchase you hope you’ll never have to use, but having the right one when you need it most can save hundreds of dollars and a massive headache.  Here’s what you need to know to choose the one right for you:

  • Many new cars (and some certified used cars) come bundled with assistance from auto manufacturers.   Though they are often valid for the length of the warranty, check with the dealer when you purchase.

  • Popular roadside assistance carriers include AAA (aaa.com), Better World Club (betterworldclub.com), AARP Roadside Assistance (aarproadside.com), and Good Sam (goodsamroadside.com).  However, add-on plans are also available from cell service carriers, credit card companies, and insurance providers, though the services they cover vary.  Some may have restrictions on towing distance, the number of roadside assistance calls allowed each year, and out-of-pocket costs you may incur by using these services.

  • Because some coverage plans are for specific vehicles (such as those affiliated with a warranty), you may need additional plans for other family vehicles.  However, other plans, such as cell phone-related assistance, cover certain people.  In choosing coverage, make sure all relevant parties and vehicles in your family are appropriately protected.
