Winter Lawn Tips

Winter Lawn Tips

In the winter months, most people aren’t thinking too much about their lawns and gardens. Instead, many are focusing on putting up holiday lights and staying warm by the fire. Keeping your gardening and landscaping in good shape while it’s cold out will make for an even better looking yard in the spring, though. Continuing our series on tips for taking care of your yard this winter, here are a few more ways to improve your outdoor space when it’s cold out.

Keep the debris under control
If you’ve been keeping up with raking, this shouldn’t be too difficult. You’re going to want to keep leaves and other debris off your lawn and away from your plants. One option is to mulch your leaves with a lawn mower and use the mulch in your flowerbeds. Either way, we recommend leaf removal for the health of your lawn.

Use what you’ve grown!
You spend the year growing beautiful plants and trees – now is the time to bring some of that indoors so you get a little bit of green all year long. If you have a spruce or fir tree, you can always use the clippings to make fresh smelling centerpieces and wreaths. Holly is also great this time of year.

Stock up on kitty litter, sand or sawdust
While salt melts ice efficiently, it’s not great for the environment. Runoff from melting snow can damage your lawn or garden. Avoid this by using alternatives that melt snow and ice just as well without the adverse effects.

Fertilize your lawn for the last time
If you’re trying to get the greenest lawn in your neighborhood next year, you should use winter fertilizer one more time shortly before Christmas. After that, it’s best to let Mother Nature run her course.

Keep watering your plants
Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean that your plants don’t need water. You don’t have to go overboard with watering, but make sure that you’re helping out, especially during warm periods.

Bel Air ALDI Announces Grand Opening Date

The ALDI store in Bel Air is opening soon at the Bel Air Plaza, with a ribbon-cutting, giveaways and more planned.

By Elizabeth Janney (Patch Staff) - January 6, 2017 6:56 am ET

BEL AIR, MD — In two weeks, the anchor space that has been vacant for nearly two years in the shopping center on US 1 at MD 24 will be up and running with a new grocer.  ALDI will open at the Bel Air Plaza on Thursday, Jan. 19.

The anchor space in the Bel Air Plaza has sat vacant since Mars closed in January 2015. To celebrate the new ALDI store, several activities are planned.  First, there will be a ceremonial ribbon-cutting. Once the store opens its doors, the first 100 shoppers to enter will receive "golden tickets," or ALDI gift cards of various amounts. On opening day, all shoppers can enter a sweepstakes to win produce for a year. The store is also planning to give away product samples and distribute eco-friendly bags on its first day in business.

Harford County Waste Disposal Center Extending Service Hours for

Residential Customers From Harford County Government

BEL AIR, Md., (Feb. 29, 2016) - The Harford County Waste Disposal Center will extend its hours of operation until 7:00 PM on Thursdays from March 17 through June 16, 2016, to improve service and reduce Saturday traffic at the landfill.  The extended Thursday hours are only for residential customers disposing of household waste or recycling at the homeowner drop-off area of the facility located in Street, Md. Operating hours on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday will remain from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Maryland Environmental Service (MES) received permission from the Maryland Department of the Environment to expand hours on Thursdays for three months in order to relieve congestion on Saturdays. If successful, MES will request a permit modification to permanently expand operating hours at the landfill. Operating hours for Harford County’s mulch and compost facility and the commercial disposal of waste will not change, remaining Monday through Saturday from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

For additional information, including acceptable materials for disposal and recycling, please visit

www.harfordrecycles.org or call the Harford Waste Disposal Center at (410) 638-3018.

Cheap Airfare

Find The Cheapest Airfare

With so many airlines, routes, connections, and extra fees, it can be hard to unearth the cheapest airfare for your needs.  Follow these suggestions to book your next flight with confidence:

ü  Search far in advance (but not too far).  A study by CheapAir.com suggests that, on average, booking seven weeks out for domestic flights and 11-12 weeks in advance for international flights is best.

ü  Flights are cheapest on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

ü  Be a flexible traveler by searching with a couple extra days or weeks on either side of the preferred departure date.  Many flight booking sites such as kayak.com offer flexible travel as an option when you search for flights.

ü  Delete cookies from your computer before looking up flights online a second time.  Sites store your search data and know you’re a potential buyer, so prices are likely to be higher than originally posted.

ü  Fly into a different city.  Look at flights into nearby airports or within the destination’s region.  In Europe, for example, it may be cheaper to fly into a nearby city then take the train to your destination.

Real Estate Corner…

Q.  What should I know when buying my first home?

A.  Buying your first home is a big step, and making mistakes can cost you thousands of dollars.  Here are three you should avoid:

  • Not having a professional home inspection.  Review the report carefully so you don’t buy a home with serious issues, such as pests, mold, or water damage.
  • Not doing a “walk-through” before closing.  Visit the property after all the furnishings have been removed so you won’t have any surprises later.
  • Not understanding the contract.  A REALTOR®  who serves as your “Buyer’s Representative” will help you understand your responsibilities and guide you through the process.

4 Ideas For Happier Holidays

4 Ideas For Happier Holidays

The holidays can get stressful in a hurry.  Try these simple methods for celebrating the season – and make it easier for you and your family.

  1. Focus on the act of giving, not the presents.  Buy gifts for the kids, but get your kids involved in giving homemade gifts (cookies, picture books) to other family members.

  1. Start a family gift exchange.  One idea: have family members put books they’d enjoy on an Amazon.com wish list.  Share those lists and choose the books you want to give them.

  1. Participate in (or donate to) a charitable activity.  Check out a site like www.volunteermatch.org, but start looking early to make sure you are matched with the organization you want.  On a smaller scale, bake something special and deliver it to a fire station or senior citizens’ home.

  1. To ease your own stress, remember to plan ahead.  Use a calendar to set aside days for exercise and rest, and learn to say no if you have too many commitments.
