DARLINGTON, MD - It's fall and that means it's time for the Darlington Apple Festival. The festival is set for Saturday, Oct. 7.

The Darlington Apple Festival happens every year the first Saturday in October. It is a rain-or-shine event.

Here are all the things you need to know.

When: The Darlington Apple Festival is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7.

What: Enjoy a day in the country with vendors, crafters, apples, produce, family activities, live musical entertainment and refreshments. Hay rides will be available behind Darlington United Methodist Church, 2118 Shuresville Road, Darlington, and so will pony rides. A cornhole tournament is also planned.

How Big: About 50,000 people attend the Darlington Apple Festival each year. The festival started in 1986.

What Not To Bring: Neither pets nor alcohol is permitted.

How To Get There

The Darlington Apple Festival is at 2120 Shuresville Road in Darlington.

Shuresville Road will be closed at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7.

Shuttle service to the festival will be available at Chesapeake Harley-Davidson (4600 Thunder Court), the Darlington firehouse (2600 Castleton Road) and the field across from the High's gas station (4585 Conowingo Road).

Handicapped parking is on the grounds of Darlington Elementary School. To get there from MD Route 161/Darlington Road, take a right onto Old Quaker Road and then proceed on School Road. Signs for handicapped parking will be posted.

Get Out Of Bed …

… and be ready to face the morning!  There are lots of benefits to waking up early.  Here’s how to do it successfully.

  • Turn off the smartphone at least an hour before bedtime.
  • Leave the curtains open and rise with the sun.  Use a dawn simulator if you struggle to wake up.
  • Wake up at the right time in your sleep cycle.  Use an app to help you regulate this.
  • Avoid hitting the snooze button.
  • Drink a glass of water and exercise first thing in the morning to feel more alert all day.

  1. Sit or lie comfortably.
  2. Close your eyes.
  3. Breath naturally, and focus attention on the breath.  Clear your thoughts.
  4. Bring attention back to the breath if your mind wanders.
  5. Start with two or three minutes, and work up to 10 or 15 minutes.

ATTENTION BALTIMORE COUNTY HOMEOWNERS

URGENT AND IMPORTANT


Baltimore County has sent out incorrect bills for your 2017-2018 Taxes.   This was done in error.   The county has said they will be sending out corrected bills and will be extending the discounted dates.   Please take caution with your bill and make sure you are paying the proper amount.   If you have an escrow and your mortgage company is paying the taxes, please notify them about the error.

Find The Cheapest Airfare

 

            With so many airlines, routes, connections, and extra fees, it can be hard to unearth the cheapest airfare for your needs.  Follow these suggestions to book your next flight with confidence:

 

ü  Search far in advance (but not too far).  A study by CheapAir.com suggests that, on average, booking seven weeks out for domestic flights and 11-12 weeks in advance for international flights is best. 

ü  Flights are cheapest on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.

ü  Be a flexible traveler by searching with a couple extra days or weeks on either side of the preferred departure date.  Many flight booking sites such as kayak.com offer flexible travel as an option when you search for flights.

ü  Delete cookies from your computer before looking up flights online a second time.  Sites store your search data and know you’re a potential buyer, so prices are likely to be higher than originally posted. 

ü  Fly into a different city.  Look at flights into nearby airports or within the destination’s region.  In Europe, for example, it may be cheaper to fly into a nearby city then take the train to your destination.

How Blue Light Affects You

 

            The blue light emitted by fluorescent light bulbs, cell phones, laptops and tablets can affect your body, according to medical researchers.  Here are some interesting ways (that you can use to your advantage):

¨  More than an hour of time in front of your device can delay sleep.  Exposure to all light at nighttime, but especially blue light, can disrupt your body’s natural cycle.  During the day blue light can wake you up immediately upon exposure, too, so use it to your advantage by turning up your screen for 15 minutes to stay more alert if you’re feeling tired.

¨  Blue light during the day can make you happier, but exposure to blue light at night is linked to symptoms of depression.  Turn off all your devices at night to help you sleep better.

¨  It may make you hungrier.  Various studies suggest the level of the hormone in your body that makes you feel full is reduced after exposure to blue light.  Have a romantic dinner by candlelight instead of in front of the TV.
